Recent Spate of Accidents

Since the formation of PHocus on 19th September 2003, there have been 22 fatal crashes on the Highway along the South Coast, resulting in 26 deaths (to 17th May 2004). 

*The Princes Highway has the worst crash and casualty rate of the key routes in south-east NSW

Fatalities and injuries are climbing from 404 in 1997 to 516 in 2001

The crash rate rose from 31.6 crashes per 100 million vehicles kilometres travelled in 1997 to 37 in 2002

The fatality rate rose from 0.57 deaths per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled in 1997 to 0.92 deaths in 2000

Illawarra Region Tourism Profile - International and Domestic Visitation

  • At least 87% of tourists travel to the Illawarra region by road

  • At least 62% of international tourists travel to the Illawarra region of NSW by road.  This is comprised of 19,680 international visitors travelling by private or company car, and 5,740 travelling by rental car in the year to June 2002.
